Key takeaways
- Asphodel is the second biome, reached after the Tartarus Fury fight and left by defeating the Bone Hydra.
- The region’s playable boundary includes the volcanic islands, Phlegethon crossings, unique mini-boss chambers, Eurydice’s house and the final stairway chamber, not merely the Hydra arena.
- There are three possible mini-boss encounters, but normally only one can appear in a run, and some runs contain none.
- Eurydice’s chamber is a non-combat story room offering one of three powerful boon-improvement effects.
- The Bone Hydra is fought in Chamber 24 Its normal reward is a Diamond when a bounty is available, otherwise Darkness.
- Fishing is possible in Asphodel after the Rod of Fishing has been purchased from the House Contractor. Its regional fish are worth Nectar, Gems or Diamonds when exchanged at the House of Hades.
About this guide
Base game scope. This guide covers Asphodel in Hades (2020), including its standard combat chambers, unique encounters, Eurydice’s chamber, the Lernaean Bone Hydra fight, fishing, route connections and progression-dependent changes. It does not treat Asphodel Meadows in other Hades continuities, *Hades II*’s locations, or the wider Greek Underworld as part of the playable region.
Overview
Asphodel is the second major biome in every ordinary escape attempt from the House of Hades. It begins after Tartarus and ends with the Lernaean Bone Hydra, whose chamber guards the stairway towards Elysium. In the game’s version of the Underworld, the former Asphodel Meadows have been overwhelmed by the superheated river Phlegethon. The region is therefore not a grassy plain but a collection of rocky islands surrounded by lava, with Zagreus travelling between sections on bone rafts.
Asphodel is deliberately more dangerous than Tartarus. Its rooms are smaller and more irregular, lava replaces many conventional floor hazards, and several enemies can push Zagreus into the magma or create temporary pools of it. The area also introduces a different kind of movement challenge: rather than simply avoiding traps, you must control where you fight so that knockback, dashes and enemy charges do not carry you off solid ground.
Overview and boundaries
Asphodel begins once Zagreus leaves the Tartarus boss chamber. Its chambers are not a fixed geographical map. Room layouts and routes change from run to run, and Eurydice’s own dialogue acknowledges that the landscape shifts. The practical boundary of the biome is therefore defined by its chamber sequence and transition rooms rather than by a permanent world map.
The region normally runs from Room 16 to Room 25, with the Bone Hydra occupying Chamber 24 and the stairway to Elysium following it. The wiki’s chamber listing describes Asphodel as ten chambers long, beginning at Room 16 and ending at the 25th Chamber in the stairway area. The chamber numbers are more useful for route planning than for navigation, because the individual islands and room connections are procedurally selected.
Included areas
The following belong to Asphodel for gameplay purposes:
The river Phlegethon is both a geographical feature and a gameplay boundary. It surrounds the islands, forms the setting for the Barge of Death, and supplies the molten terrain that makes the region distinct. In Greek myth, the Phlegethon is the river of fire; Hades uses that association directly while giving it a more hazardous, volcanic presentation.
Geography and environmental hazards
Rocky islands and lava channels
Most ordinary Asphodel rooms are built from one or more solid islands separated by magma. The arena layout may leave broad spaces for melee combat or divide the room into narrow platforms. Some enemies float and can cross the lava without suffering its effects, while many grounded enemies cannot safely remain in it.
Zagreus takes rapidly increasing damage while standing in magma. The damage begins relatively low but escalates quickly, so treating lava as a temporary shortcut is dangerous. Magma also slows movement. A dash is usually safer than walking out, particularly if an enemy is applying knockback or a fireball has just created a new pool beneath Zagreus.
Fireballs can periodically land on sections of solid ground and turn them into temporary magma. This matters in longer fights because a previously safe position may disappear. Keep an escape route open rather than fighting with your back to the edge.
Smoke vents
After enough enemies have been defeated in some chambers, vents can open and emit smoke. The smoke obscures the screen and blurs Zagreus’s view if he stands in it. It does not affect enemies, so lingering inside it usually gives the opponents an advantage.
Explosive barrels
Explosive barrels from Tartarus can also appear in Asphodel. Zagreus’s attacks trigger them, after which they detonate and deal heavy damage in the blast radius. They are particularly risky in narrow islands where a normal attack or reflected projectile may activate one unintentionally. They damage enemies as well, so they can be useful if you deliberately lure armoured targets nearby.
Practical movement rules
- 01Fight towards the centre of solid ground, not at the edge of an island.
- 02Dash diagonally away from lava, rather than dashing along the rim.
- 03Watch for fireball landing zones before committing to a long attack animation.
- 04Do not chase a ranged enemy across magma unless the route is clearly safe.
- 05Use pillars and corners carefully. Cover can protect against projectiles, but it can also leave you trapped when the floor changes.
Subareas and named encounters
Ordinary Asphodel chambers
Ordinary chambers contain the region’s standard enemies and a room reward shown on the entrance door. Rewards may include a god’s Boon, a Daedalus Hammer, a Centaur Heart, Darkness, Gems, Nectar, Obols, a Pomegranate or another standard run reward.
The entrances do not identify every exact combat arrangement. A door bearing a god symbol tells you the reward category, while a small skull beneath the reward indicates an elite or mini-boss encounter. In Asphodel, the skull is not enough to identify which special chamber lies ahead.
Barge of Death
The Barge of Death is a mini-boss encounter staged on a large moving raft crossing the Phlegethon. Zagreus faces three waves of enemies, including combinations of Elite Bloodless, Inferno Bombers, Slam Dancers, Burn-Flingers and Wave-Makers. Dire Voidstones may protect the waves by making nearby enemies invulnerable.
The Voidstones should normally be destroyed first. Ignoring them can turn an otherwise manageable wave into a prolonged fight against enemies who cannot be damaged. The raft itself limits movement, making knockback and area attacks more dangerous than in a normal chamber.
The encounter rewards a god Boon of increased rarity. It is not guaranteed to appear, and it is possible to complete a run without seeing any Asphodel mini-boss room.
Megagorgon chamber
The Megagorgon chamber contains an Elite Megagorgon and a Dire Skull-Crusher. The Megagorgon retreats to maintain distance and fires slow-moving homing projectiles that can Petrify Zagreus. The Skull-Crusher provides the close-range pressure, jumping and crashing down with a damaging shockwave.
Prioritise whichever enemy is controlling your movement. If the Megagorgon’s projectiles are filling the arena, eliminate it first. If the Skull-Crusher is repeatedly forcing you away from safe ground, damage it while dashing through or around its landing zone.
The magma around the edge of this room produces fireballs more frequently than usual. The encounter therefore becomes harder as the safe floor shrinks.
Witches’ Circle
The Witches’ Circle is fought on a central island surrounded by magma, with four Dire Spreaders positioned on the surrounding islands. Two pillars provide cover against their projectiles.
This room rewards patient movement. The Spreaders fire spiralling patterns of projectiles, and the central island can become crowded with overlapping attacks. Use the pillars to break lines of fire, but do not remain stationary for too long. Crossing the magma is usually worse than waiting for a projectile pattern to pass, so use short dashes and attack from the edge of cover.
Like the other mini-boss rooms, Witches’ Circle offers a higher-rarity god Boon.
Eurydice’s house
Eurydice’s chamber is a safe, non-combat room. The house is set apart from the ordinary volcanic battlefields and functions as both a character encounter and a powerful build-improvement stop.
The choice depends on the condition of the current build. Ambrosia Delight is strongest when your important Boons are already at useful levels but have poor rarity. Pom Porridge is better when several core Boons are already rare or when you have a build with strong level scaling. Refreshing Nectar is the most forward-looking option and is especially useful before several remaining god rooms.
Eurydice can appear only once per run and is not guaranteed to appear. Her chamber cannot be replaced with another room using Fated Authority. Because there is no combat, it does not count as a normal encounter for most Chaos boon-debuff purposes, although it still counts for certain Well of Charon effects.
Stairway Chamber
After defeating the Bone Hydra, a raft arrives in the upper-left part of the arena and carries Zagreus to the stairway chamber. This transition area leads to Elysium and may contain useful facilities:
This is a transition and preparation room, not an additional ordinary Asphodel route. The next biome begins after Zagreus takes the stairway towards Elysium.
Eurydice’s house: Eurydice offers one of three effects
| Treat | Effect |
|---|---|
| Ambrosia Delight | Up to two random Boons are upgraded to the next rarity |
| Pom Porridge | Up to four random Boons gain one level |
| Refreshing Nectar | The next three Boons found have increased rarity |
Residents, visitors and associated characters
Residents and local figures
Eurydice is the former wife of Orpheus. In the game’s backstory, Orpheus attempted to bring her back from the Underworld but looked behind him before they reached the surface, losing her again. She has since settled in Asphodel and turns the region’s heat to practical use by cooking with the Phlegethon.
Later progression can reunite Eurydice and Orpheus. That storyline is handled partly at the House of Hades and partly through further meetings in Asphodel. The relevant prophecy requires progress with both characters and the House Contractor’s work concerning Orpheus.
Associated but not physically present
The following characters are connected with Asphodel’s story but should not be counted as ordinary Asphodel residents:
Residents and local figures
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Eurydice | A shade who lives in Asphodel and can be encountered in her house. |
| Lernaean Bone Hydra | The biome boss, dwelling in the Phlegethon and guarding the route to Elysium. |
| Charon | A travelling merchant who can appear in shop chambers. He is not an Asphodel resident in the same sense as Eurydice. |
| Zagreus | The player character and visitor attempting to escape the Underworld. |
Enemies and security
Asphodel’s enemy forces combine Underworld security personnel with creatures adapted to the volcanic terrain. Standard enemies can appear in armoured or Elite forms, gaining additional durability and upgraded attacks.
Named Asphodel enemy directory
The most important tactical distinction is between enemies that control space and enemies that force movement. Inferno Bombers and Burn-Flingers create explosive or ranged pressure, while Skull-Crushers and other Bloodless can punish Zagreus for fighting too close to the edge. Voidstones are support enemies that make nearby targets invulnerable and should usually be removed immediately.
Some mini-boss enemies are exclusive to their special encounters. The Megagorgon appears in its dedicated chamber, while Dire Spreaders and the Dire Skull-Crusher are the enhanced forms used by the Witches’ Circle and Megagorgon encounters.

The Lernaean Bone Hydra
The Bone Hydra is always fought in Chamber 24 and is the only final boss assigned to Asphodel. It is what remains of the Hydra killed by Heracles and now guards the passage towards Elysium.
Standard fight
The main head fights from the far side of the arena and uses attacks including:
At approximately 66% and 33% health, the main head becomes invulnerable and summons support heads around the arena. Three support heads appear at the first threshold and six at the second. Each support head has a colour-coded attack style, such as melee slams, magma-spitting fireballs, Bloodless-summoning Hydra Teeth or directed waves.
The support heads must be defeated before the main head becomes vulnerable again. During these phases, prioritise heads that restrict movement or cover the arena in magma. Do not waste high-damage effects on the main head while it is invulnerable, since effects applied before the phase change do not continue damaging it once the transition begins.
Extreme Measures
The second rank of Extreme Measures changes the Hydra arena substantially. The fight moves to a smaller island divided by magma, with breakable pillars replacing the usual permanent cover. The main head is initially central rather than tethered to the upper edge.
At the first health threshold, the head breaks free and begins chasing Zagreus. It can lunge and perform triple ground slams while the support heads remain active. At the second threshold, it loses some attacks for the remainder of the fight. This version is not simply a stronger standard encounter: its altered arena and mobile main head require a different approach.
Rewards
The first-clear Diamond bounty is tracked by weapon, so defeating the Hydra with one weapon does not remove the corresponding first-clear bounty for the others. Diamonds can later be spent on House Contractor work orders, decorations, music and Resource Director ranks.
Fishing and collectibles
Fishing requires the Rod of Fishing, purchased through the House Contractor. A fishing spot can appear in a suitable chamber after combat has been cleared. Asphodel has a 10% fishing-spot chance under the fishing system’s listed biome rules, with a ten-chamber cooldown since the previous fishing spot.
Asphodel fish
Fish are exchanged with the Head Chef after returning to the House of Hades. The fishing spot must be in a chamber designed to contain one, and the encounter must be cleared before Zagreus can begin fishing.
Fishing is missable within a run: if you leave the chamber or fail to notice the audio cue, the opportunity is not preserved for later. Check lava or water edges after collecting the room reward, particularly in quiet or unusually open chambers.
Asphodel fish
| Rarity | Fish | House of Hades exchange value |
|---|---|---|
| Common | Slavug | 1 Nectar |
| Rare | Chrustacean | 3 Gems |
| Legendary | Flameater | 5 Diamonds |
Recommended route through Asphodel
- 01Enter from the Tartarus boss exit.
- 02Check every doorway reward, weighing build needs against survivability. A skull-marked door means an elite or special encounter, not a guaranteed specific mini-boss.
- 03Take Chaos Gates when the sacrifice is acceptable, but avoid entering one if the resulting health loss or curse would make a difficult mini-boss unsafe.
- 04Search for a fishing spot after combat, especially in rooms with visible water or magma.
- 05Treat Eurydice’s chamber as a build checkpoint, not merely a free healing room. Choose the treat that improves the whole build rather than the most immediately attractive option.
- 06Use Charon’s shop before the boss when possible, especially if you need healing, a Boon, a Centaur Heart or a Death Defiance-related purchase.
- 07Prepare for the Hydra with a clear movement plan. Keep the centre of the arena available and avoid spending every high-damage cooldown before a support-head phase.
- 08Collect the bounty and use the stairway chamber to heal, purge or purchase last-minute items before entering Elysium.
Progression changes and missable content
Asphodel is procedurally rearranged between attempts, so no fixed route guarantees Eurydice, a particular mini-boss or a fishing spot. The following content is therefore encounter-dependent:
The Bone Hydra is fixed as the biome’s final encounter, but its available reward changes with weapon bounty status and Heat. Extreme Measures changes the arena and combat pattern without creating a separate region.
The Eurydice and Orpheus storyline also develops over multiple visits and House progression. Seeing Eurydice once does not immediately complete their reunion. The Fated List entry concerning them requires further conversations, Nectar gifts and the relevant Contractor work order.
Trivia and inspiration
Asphodel draws on the classical Asphodel Meadows, traditionally associated with ordinary or unremarkable dead rather than the punished dead of Tartarus or the honoured dead of Elysium. The game deliberately reverses the expected visual mood: instead of peaceful flower-filled meadows, it presents a region consumed by Phlegethon’s fire.
The soundtrack reinforces the distinction between ordinary biome music, the river crossings and Eurydice’s house. Tracks associated with the area include “Through Asphodel”, “Field of Souls”, “River of Flame” and Eurydice’s “Good Riddance”.
