Key takeaways
- Greece is the final region of the original game, reached by taking the exit after defeating Hades.
- It is a brief, non-combat story area, not a full fourth biome with enemy rooms and a boss.
- The principal landmark is Persephone’s cottage and garden, where Zagreus finally meets his mother.
- Zagreus cannot remain on the Surface as a child of the Underworld, he rapidly loses his strength after reaching the living world.
- Greece contains no normal shops, vendors, combat encounters, rooms, minibosses or region-specific progression system.
- Its main repeatable collectible is Surface fishing, with Trout, Bass and Sturgeon providing Gemstones, Ambrosia and Titan Blood when handed to the Head Chef.
- After the main story’s later progression, the original cottage sequence is no longer normally revisited, but Surface fish can still appear in the arena where Zagreus fought Hades.
About this guide
Scope: Hades base game, including the playable Surface sequence after defeating Hades. This guide does not treat the much larger Surface route from Hades II as part of Greece in the original game.
Overview
Greece, also referred to broadly as the Surface, is the final playable location in Hades. It is the living world above the Underworld and the destination Zagreus is trying to reach throughout the game. In practical gameplay terms, however, the original Hades does not present Greece as a large explorable region or a conventional combat biome. It is a short, story-focused sequence after the final battle with Hades, centred on Persephone’s cottage and its surrounding countryside.
This distinction matters. In the base game, Greece is the name used for the final Surface region, while the Surface is the broader cosmological realm containing the living world. The game does not provide a chain of Surface subregions comparable to Tartarus, Asphodel, Elysium and the Temple of Styx. Mount Olympus, Athens, Thessaly and other Greek locations are discussed or implied through mythology and dialogue, but they are not playable subareas of Greece in Hades. Hades II uses “Surface” as a much larger route with separate regions such as the City of Ephyra and the Rift of Thessaly, but those belong to the sequel and should not be merged into this article.
Scope and boundaries
What counts as Greece in the base game?
For this guide, Greece means the playable Surface section that follows the first successful defeat of Hades. The route is a small sequence of outdoor screens leading to Persephone’s home. It includes the path Zagreus walks, the garden and cottage area, and the nearby water where fishing may be possible.
The game’s location terminology can be slightly confusing because the region is also commonly described as the Surface. “The Surface” is the setting-level term for the living world, while “Greece” is the name used for the final playable biome or region in the first game. The Underworld is a separate realm, even though the game’s route begins there and the House of Hades serves as Zagreus’ hub between attempts.
What is not included?: The following should remain separate
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| House of Hades | the Underworld hub, not part of Greece. |
| The Temple of Styx | the final Underworld region before Hades. |
| Hades’ arena | the boss encounter area immediately before the Surface sequence. It is associated with the end of the route and can later provide Surface fish, but it is not the cottage area itself. |
| Mount Olympus | mentioned in the setting and important to the gods, but not playable in Hades. It becomes a full region in Hades II. |
| City of Ephyra, Rift of Thessaly and The Summit | Hades II Surface regions, not subareas of Greece in the original game. |
Geography and appearance
Greece is presented as a striking contrast to the Underworld. Zagreus moves through a bright, open landscape with snow, exposed rock, trees, grass, water and a warmer palette. The change is deliberately overwhelming because Zagreus has spent his entire life in the House of Hades and its subterranean domains. The Surface therefore functions as both a geographical destination and a visual revelation.
The playable landscape is not mapped as a detailed country or city. There are no labelled settlements, roads, provinces or civic buildings. Instead, the sequence uses a narrow route to communicate distance and discovery:
The location should therefore be read as a story vista and destination space, not as a missing open-world zone. There is no evidence in the base game that the player can travel onward from the cottage to Olympus, a town or another named Greek region.
Geography and appearance: steps
- 01Zagreus emerges from the Underworld into a cold, mountainous landscape.
- 02He follows the visible path through the outdoor terrain.
- 03The weather and lighting change as he advances.
- 04He reaches a greener area containing Persephone’s garden and cottage.
- 05The story proceeds through dialogue and cutscenes rather than combat or room-clearing.
Subareas and named places
Greece has very few canonically named internal places. The most useful division is functional rather than administrative.
Mountain path
The first stretch is the snowy, elevated route immediately after Zagreus leaves Hades’ arena. Movement is initially restricted and the sequence uses the landscape to show Zagreus weakening in the mortal air. As he progresses, the path opens visually and movement becomes more natural.
Directory
Persephone’s garden
The garden is the green, cultivated area where Persephone is found. It is the emotional centre of the sequence and the place where Zagreus learns the truth about his birth and family history.
Directory
Persephone’s cottage
The cottage is the principal building in Greece. Zagreus does not enter it as a normal explorable interior during the playable sequence. Its importance is narrative: it is Persephone’s home and the place that confirms her continued life on the Surface.
Directory
Surface water and fishing points
Small bodies of water occur along the Surface route. If a fishing point is present, Zagreus can use the Fishing Rod there. Fishing-point appearance is random rather than guaranteed, so the route does not always contain a catch.

Access and route
Unlocking Greece
Greece is reached during a normal escape attempt.
The first successful visit occurs after Zagreus defeats Hades for the first time. This is not the same thing as completing the entire narrative. Reaching Persephone begins the larger sequence that eventually leads to the game’s true ending and post-credits progression.
Unlocking Greece
- 01Progress through Tartarus, Asphodel, Elysium and the Temple of Styx.
- 02Defeat Hades at the end of the Underworld route.
- 03Take the exit that appears after the fight.
- 04Continue along the Surface path towards Persephone’s cottage.
- 05Speak with Persephone to advance the story.
Residents and characters
Persephone
Persephone is the central figure of Greece. She lives in the cottage and is the person Zagreus has been seeking throughout the escape attempts. The meeting explains why she left the House of Hades, why Zagreus was raised without knowing her and why Hades has hidden the truth from him.
Her garden and cottage also establish a visual counterpart to the House of Hades. The House is an administrative, underworld palace surrounded by shades and death; Persephone’s home is personal, rural and connected to the living world.
Directory
Other figures associated with Greece
Hades is not a resident of the Surface area, although he is directly connected to it through the preceding boss encounter. The Olympians are also not present physically in Greece during this sequence. Their influence is communicated through boons, dialogue and the wider mythological setting rather than by Surface appearances.
The absence of ordinary mortals is notable. Greece is a living-world location, but the player does not encounter a village, guards, merchants, farmers or civilians. The game narrows the Surface to one private household and its surrounding landscape.
Enemies, bosses and security
There are no regular enemies in Greece and no Greece-specific boss. Zagreus does not fight his way through the landscape, and there are no traps, armoured chambers, miniboss gates or Elite encounters.
The major combat obstacle is the fight with Hades, but that encounter occurs immediately before the Surface region. It belongs to the Underworld escape route and should not be counted as a boss located in Greece.
The lack of enemies is mechanically important. Greece is not a reward biome in which the player is expected to maximise damage, manage a build or choose room rewards. Once Zagreus has defeated Hades, the game temporarily changes from action roguelike to linear narrative exploration.
Shops, services and facilities
Greece contains no conventional services.
This is why preparation matters before entering the final part of the route. Once the player leaves Hades’ arena, Greece offers no conventional opportunity to heal, buy items or alter the build.
Shops, services and facilities
| Service or facility | Present in Greece? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Charon’s shop | No | Charon is not present in the cottage sequence |
| Well of Charon | No | No purchasable temporary items |
| Fountain chamber | No | No healing fountain |
| Chaos Gate | No | No Chaos encounter |
| Daedalus Hammer | No | No weapon upgrade |
| Infernal Trove | No | No timed reward challenge |
| Keepsake cabinet | No | No equipment management |
| Contractor | No | The House of Hades remains the upgrade hub |
| Fishing | Sometimes | Depends on a fishing point spawning |
| Story dialogue | Yes | The principal activity |
Items and collectibles
Surface fish
Greece has three associated fish. They are obtained only from fishing points and are turned in at the House of Hades through the Head Chef. Their rewards are fixed by species and rarity.
The fish are not guaranteed to appear in a particular visit. A fishing point may spawn in the Surface sequence, and the fish within it are determined by the normal fishing rarity rules. The player must react quickly to the bobber prompt because fishing opportunities are easy to miss if Zagreus leaves the area or advances the sequence.
Fishing checklist
After later story progression removes the normal cottage visit from the standard route, fishing points may still appear in Hades’ arena. This allows the three Surface species to remain obtainable, although the opportunity is still random.
Surface fish
| Fish | Rarity | Turn-in reward |
|---|---|---|
| Trout | Common | 1 Diamond |
| Bass | Rare | 1 Ambrosia |
| Sturgeon | Legendary | 1 Titan Blood |
First visit
- 01Defeat Hades. This is the required combat condition for entering Greece.
First visit
- 01Leave the boss arena. Use the exit that appears after the encounter. The game transitions to the Surface.
First visit
- 01Follow the mountain path. Keep moving along the visible route. The initial movement restrictions are part of the scripted sequence.
First visit
- 01Inspect water if fishing matters to you. Search the edges of the outdoor screens for the fishing-point cue. Do not expect one every time.
First visit
- 01Continue towards the garden. The route eventually reaches Persephone’s cultivated grounds.
First visit
- 01Speak with Persephone. This advances the central family revelation and establishes the next phase of Zagreus’ story.
First visit
- 01Watch the resulting sequence. Greece is primarily a narrative destination. There is no additional combat route beyond the cottage visit.
Progression changes and missability
Before the true ending
During the early Surface visits, Zagreus can reach Persephone’s cottage after defeating Hades. The scene develops across repeated attempts as new conversations become available.
The game’s story is not completed merely by reaching Greece once. The player must continue attempting escapes and returning to the House of Hades. Repeated victories and conversations gradually move the family plot forward.
After the main ending
Once the relevant ending sequence has been completed, the normal flow changes. Zagreus no longer repeatedly visits Persephone’s cottage as an ordinary post-run destination. This can make it appear that Greece has become inaccessible.
The important exception is fishing. Surface fish remain obtainable through possible fishing points in Hades’ arena, meaning the fish collection and related reward progression are not necessarily lost after the cottage sequence disappears from routine play.
Missable content
The most practical missable opportunity is a fishing point:
There are no known permanent Greece-only weapons, shops, Daedalus upgrades or mandatory collectibles in the cottage route.
Lore and significance
Greece represents Zagreus’ first direct contact with the living world. The Underworld is familiar to him, even when hostile. The Surface is not. Its light, weather, vegetation and open spaces make his journey feel like an arrival into an unknown homeland rather than simply another level.
The region also reframes the game’s central conflict. Zagreus initially believes he is escaping Hades because of resentment and a desire for independence. Reaching Persephone reveals that the escape is also an attempt to reconstruct a broken family history. Greece is therefore the physical destination of the run and the narrative destination of the first major act.
The game’s treatment of Greece is deliberately selective. It does not attempt to depict the whole country, a historical city or a complete mythological map. Instead, it gives the player one intimate place: a cottage where Persephone has made a life away from the Underworld. The wider world remains mostly off-screen, preserved through dialogue, Codex entries and the gods’ references to the mortal realm.
Separate continuity note: Hades II
Players familiar with Hades II should keep its Surface route separate from Greece in the original game. The sequel expands the Surface into distinct regions including the City of Ephyra, the Rift of Thessaly, Mount Olympus and the Summit. Those locations have their own enemies, bosses, characters, resources and progression rules. They are not hidden subareas that can be reached from Persephone’s cottage in Hades.
