About this guide
Spoiler warning: This guide covers late-game House access, the Administrative Chamber flashback, the Security Log and Permanent Record, Nyx’s favour, and several character quests involving sealed documents. It does not cover Hades II except where a distinction is useful.
Overview
Hades, base game
The Administrative Chamber is a restricted office inside the House of Hades. It is not a region of the Underworld and it is not part of the escape route through Tartarus, Asphodel, Elysium or the Temple of Styx. Instead, it is a story-focused House subarea where the Underworld’s bureaucracy is carried out by working Shades. Zagreus first visits it in a flashback, then regains access later by purchasing a House Contractor work order.
The room has little conventional gameplay: there are no enemies, chamber rewards, shops or combat encounters. Its importance comes from what it records and unlocks. The chamber contains the Security Log, the Permanent Record, the Eldest Sigil, a Water Cooler, and several story documents used in the liberation quests for Sisyphus, Orpheus and Achilles. It also provides one of the clearest views of Zagreus’s failed attempts as an administrative system rather than merely as a series of player deaths.
Location and boundaries
The Administrative Chamber belongs to the House of Hades, the Underworld’s administrative centre and Hades’s residence. It should therefore be kept separate from the wider House complex, including the Great Hall, Lounge, Zagreus’s bedchambers, Hades’s bedroom and the eastern hallway. The western hallway links the Great Hall with the Administrative Chamber and Hades’s bedroom.
This distinction matters because the game presents the Administrative Chamber as a proper workplace rather than as another decorative corridor. The room contains desks, records and Shades performing bureaucratic tasks for Hades. It is not a randomly generated chamber, does not appear on the map during an escape attempt and does not provide a normal Underworld reward.
Included within the Administrative Chamber
The following named or functionally distinct elements are treated as part of the chamber itself:
Nearby but separate areas
These should not be merged into the chamber:
The House Contractor is especially important to the chamber’s progression, but his desk is in the Great Hall rather than inside the Administrative Chamber.

Appearance and purpose
The chamber is an office filled with ongoing paperwork. The working Shades are shown carrying out routine administrative duties while Zagreus wanders through their workplace. Their work includes tracking failed escape attempts, maintaining House records, checking attendance, processing compensation and recording the House’s income in resources such as Gemstones, Diamonds and Darkness.
This gives the room a different tone from the rest of the House. The Great Hall is a court and residence, the Lounge is a social space, and the western hallway is mainly a passage. The Administrative Chamber is where the Underworld’s systems are made visible. It records the practical consequences of Zagreus’s attempts to escape and presents the House as an institution with staff, records and procedures.
Zagreus’s behaviour also establishes that he once had duties here. In the flashback, he is expected to sign in, check reports, sort ledgers and complete other work under Hades’s supervision. He is not merely trespassing into a bureaucratic office. He is returning to a workplace where he previously failed to learn his responsibilities.
Access and unlock route
1. Wait for the flashback
The chamber is first encountered in a flashback dream. Zagreus arrives late for work and enters the office while Hades supervises him. The flashback is a distinct story event, not the same as physically entering the locked room in the House.
The exact timing of the flashback is progression-dependent rather than tied simply to a particular boss or weapon. If it has not appeared, continue playing escape attempts, speaking with House characters and purchasing available House Contractor upgrades.
2. Buy Administrative Privilege
After the flashback, the House Contractor can offer Administrative Privilege. The work order costs 2 Diamonds and re-authorises Zagreus to enter the chamber. The Contractor’s entry identifies the flashback as a prerequisite and associates the late-game unlock with 27 escape attempts.
The achievement Back to Work is awarded for earning access to and entering the Administrative Chamber.
If the work order is not appearing
Public guides do not present a single completely consistent trigger sequence for the flashback beyond general story progression, so the safest statement is that the event is gated by late-game House progress rather than by one universally documented, player-controlled action.
2. Buy Administrative Privilege: The practical route is
- 01Complete escape attempts and continue House dialogue.
- 02Experience the Administrative Chamber flashback.
- 03Return to the House after a run.
- 04Check the House Contractor’s available work orders.
- 05Purchase Administrative Privilege for 2 Diamonds.
- 06Walk through the western hallway and enter the newly accessible chamber.
Interior directory
The chamber contains several interactive points. Their exact placement is fixed, although the availability of some documents depends on quest progression.
Eldest Sigil
The Eldest Sigil is the large sigil associated with Hades’s movement through the Underworld. It is used by Hades to teleport around his realm, including his arrival for the final battle when Zagreus reaches the surface.
It later becomes part of Nyx’s favour. Nyx explains that the Sigil once provided access to the deepest reaches of the realm but that the bridge to Chaos is no longer functioning. The House Contractor can sell Eldest Sigil Restoration, a House repair costing 3,142 Darkness. Once purchased, the restoration allows Nyx to visit Chaos and progresses her favour.
Permanent Record
The Permanent Record is the chamber’s long-term run-statistics display. It allows Zagreus to inspect information about his progress rather than relying only on the current escape attempt.
The record’s information is expanded in later game updates. It can show clears, best times and best Heat for the relevant content. This is distinct from the Security Log, which is presented as a chronological record of individual escape attempts.
The Permanent Record is primarily informational. It does not award resources, unlock a weapon or change Zagreus’s build.
Security Log
The Security Log records escape attempts and related results. Zagreus can inspect the history of his runs, making it the most direct in-world explanation for how the House knows about his repeated attempts to leave.
The log is also a small piece of environmental storytelling. Rather than treating a failed run as an invisible reset, it presents failure as something documented by the Underworld’s administration. Later updates made it possible to hold the input to scroll through escape attempts more rapidly.
Water Cooler
The Water Cooler is a decorative and interactive office object filled with the waters of the River Styx. Zagreus can inspect it, but he repeatedly declines to drink from it. It does not restore health, provide a temporary bonus or act as a consumable facility.
Working Shades
The Shades in the chamber are ordinary bureaucratic workers rather than named residents or recruitable companions. They react negatively to Zagreus entering their workplace, reflecting his history of ignoring or mishandling his duties there. Zagreus can make encouraging comments to them, but there is no general recruitment, gifting or service system attached to these workers.
Named characters associated with the chamber
No permanent named NPC is stationed inside the Administrative Chamber. The room’s regular occupants are unnamed working Shades. However, several named characters are strongly associated with its quests and records.
Zagreus
Zagreus is the playable character and the chamber’s former worker. The flashback shows him attempting to carry out office duties under Hades’s supervision. Once the room is unlocked, he can inspect its records, interact with its objects and locate sealed documents.
His comments in the chamber include remarks about his escape attempts, the Security Log and the Water Cooler. These interactions reinforce the contrast between his casual attitude and the seriousness with which the House treats administrative work.
Hades
Hades oversees the work shown in the flashback. He corrects Zagreus’s mistakes and treats the office as part of the formal operation of his realm. Hades is not a normal resident of the chamber after it is unlocked, and the chamber should not be confused with his office and throne area in the Great Hall.
Nyx
Nyx is the most important character connected with the chamber after access is restored. She directs Zagreus towards the Eldest Sigil as part of her favour and asks him to restore its connection to Chaos.
The restoration is a House Contractor purchase, not an item collected directly from the chamber.
Sisyphus
Sisyphus’s liberation quest uses the Administrative Chamber as the location of his relevant document. After the surrounding conversations and requirements are satisfied, Zagreus can find Knave-King’s Sentence in the chamber and then purchase the corresponding sealed-document contract from the House Contractor.
The chamber therefore acts as an archive of the legal or contractual arrangements governing punishments in the Underworld. The actual purchase and sentence alteration happen through the House Contractor, not through a clerk inside the room.
Orpheus
Orpheus’s favour similarly requires a document from the Administrative Chamber. Once the relevant conversations with Orpheus, Eurydice, Nyx and Hades have occurred, Zagreus can find his contract in the chamber and then buy Singer’s Gamble from the House Contractor for 3 Diamonds.
Achilles
Achilles’s favour uses another document in the chamber, Hero’s Sacrifice. Once the relevant progression is active, Zagreus can find it and buy the associated House Contractor work order for 5 Diamonds. The contract permits Achilles to return to Elysium.
Nyx: The sequence is
- 01Progress Nyx’s relationship and dialogue.
- 02Hear her explain that she wishes to reconnect with Chaos.
- 03Inspect or revisit the Eldest Sigil in the Administrative Chamber.
- 04Purchase Eldest Sigil Restoration from the House Contractor for 3,142 Darkness.
- 05Allow Nyx’s subsequent dialogue and story events to progress.
- 06Encounter Nyx visiting Chaos during later escape attempts, where applicable.
Complete verified object and document directory
The following list consolidates the named objects and documents directly associated with the chamber in the base game sources consulted.
Related Contractor purchases
The documents are found in the chamber, but the associated permissions are purchased from the House Contractor. Keeping these functions separate prevents a common mistake: the chamber is an archive and inspection area, not a shop.
Fixed objects and facilities
Related Contractor purchases
| Purchase | Cost | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Administrative Privilege | 2 Diamonds | Re-authorises entry to the chamber |
| Knave-King’s Sentence | 4 Diamonds | Releases Sisyphus from his punishment |
| Singer’s Gamble | 3 Diamonds | Permits Orpheus to reunite with Eurydice |
| Hero’s Sacrifice | 5 Diamonds | Allows Achilles to return to Elysium |
| Eldest Sigil Restoration | 3,142 Darkness | Restores the Sigil’s bridge to Chaos |
Recommended exploration route
Once the room is unlocked, a practical visit should follow this order:
Recommended exploration route: steps
- 01Enter from the western hallway. This confirms that Administrative Privilege is active and avoids confusing the room with Hades’s bedroom.
- 02Inspect the Permanent Record. Review overall clears, times and Heat-related information.
- 03Check the Security Log. This is useful after a notable attempt, especially if you want to review the game’s presentation of previous runs.
- 04Inspect the Eldest Sigil. Do this whenever Nyx’s favour is active or after she mentions restoring access to Chaos.
- 05Search for the relevant sealed document. Documents are quest-state dependent, so do not assume that every character’s file will be available immediately.
- 06Return to the House Contractor. Buy the required sentence or repair only after confirming that you have the necessary Diamonds or Darkness.
- 07Speak to the involved character again. Sisyphus, Orpheus, Achilles and Nyx require further dialogue after the document or repair purchase.
What the chamber does not contain
To avoid overextending the location’s boundaries, the Administrative Chamber does not contain:
The chamber’s gameplay is deliberately narrow. It provides records, story triggers and quest documents rather than a general-purpose facility.
Lore and thematic importance
The Administrative Chamber is one of the game’s clearest demonstrations that the House of Hades is more than a backdrop for post-run conversations. It is a functioning institution with offices, workers, records and a chain of authority. The room’s paperwork formalises several ideas that the rest of the game presents more abstractly:
The chamber also connects the House’s bureaucracy to its mythic structure. The Eldest Sigil is simultaneously an administrative object, a symbol of Hades’s authority and a mechanism capable of linking the House to the realm of Chaos. Nyx’s favour turns an apparently inert office landmark into a key part of the House’s wider cosmology.
Progression changes
The chamber changes in significance as the player advances.
The chamber itself does not become a combat area or acquire procedural variations. Its changes are almost entirely determined by narrative and relationship progression.
Progression changes
| Progression state | What changes |
|---|---|
| Before the flashback | Door is inaccessible; the player may hear or see references to the restricted office |
| Administrative Chamber flashback | Zagreus’s former duties and Hades’s supervision are shown |
| Administrative Privilege purchased | Physical access becomes available |
| Early access | Permanent Record, Security Log, Eldest Sigil and Water Cooler can be inspected |
| Character favour active | Relevant sealed documents become available for Sisyphus, Orpheus or Achilles |
| Nyx’s favour active | Eldest Sigil becomes central to restoring contact with Chaos |
| Later record updates | Permanent Record can display expanded statistics such as clears, best times and best Heat |
