About this guide
Scope: Base-game Hades, including the Chaos Gate destination visited by Zagreus during escape attempts. This guide treats the Chaos Realm as a distinct optional location, not as a conventional Underworld biome. Hades II, its Crossroads, Chaos Trials and later Chaos content are excluded.
Overview
The Chaos Realm is the strange, abstract domain of Primordial Chaos, reached through optional Chaos Gates that can appear inside ordinary escape chambers. It is not a full biome like Tartarus, Asphodel or Elysium, and it has no conventional route, map, chamber sequence, enemies or boss. Instead, it is a short detour from the main run: Zagreus sacrifices health to enter, speaks with Chaos, chooses one of several risk-and-reward boons, and returns to the chamber from which he came.
That apparent simplicity hides several important systems. Chaos Gates are gated behind early progression, their appearance is random, and their boons are unlike those of the Olympians. Each Chaos boon begins with a temporary curse, such as reduced health or damage, then grants a stronger benefit after a number of encounters. The Realm also becomes relevant to the relationship between Nyx and Chaos, the Cosmic Egg keepsake, fishing, the Night and Darkness prophecy and several pieces of late-run dialogue.
Boundaries and nature of the location
The Chaos Realm is best understood as a pocket destination outside the ordinary chamber structure. A Chaos Gate appears within another room, usually after the room has been cleared. Zagreus interacts with it and is transported to Chaos’s domain. Once the conversation and boon selection are complete, he returns to the originating run.
It is therefore misleading to describe the Realm as a broad geographic layer beneath Tartarus. The game’s Codex presents Chaos as older and deeper than the Underworld, but the playable space is a compact encounter location rather than a traversable country or biome. The location has no separate progression track, exits, shops, combat rooms or boss route. The larger region it belongs to is the metaphysical space associated with Chaos, not a conventional section of Hades’ kingdom.

Geography and visual character
Chaos’s domain is presented as an abstract void rather than a natural landscape. The floor and surrounding space use the game’s characteristic dark, cosmic imagery, with floating or fragmented structures and a strong sense that ordinary distance and physical boundaries do not apply. The Realm is deliberately difficult to place on an Underworld map. Even Chaos’s own Codex description treats it less as a worldly destination than as the primordial condition from which existence emerged.
There is no normal road network or hierarchy of districts. The practical geography is simply:
The gate is not the same thing as the Infernal Gate. An Infernal Gate is a separate challenge portal associated with an optional combat challenge, whereas the Chaos Gate leads to Chaos and a boon selection.
Named locations and connected places
The first four Underworld names above are possible regions from which a Chaos Gate may be encountered, subject to the game’s spawning rules. The House of Hades is the hub where Zagreus receives related story progression, but it is not physically connected to the Chaos Realm by a permanent doorway.

Geography and visual character: steps
- 01Origin chamber: the ordinary combat, reward or special chamber in which the gate appears.
- 02Chaos Gate: the portal marked by Chaos’s eye.
- 03Chaos’s domain: the short encounter room containing Chaos, possible fishing water and, after the relevant story progression, a possible visit from Nyx.
- 04Return to the origin chamber: Zagreus resumes the same escape attempt.

Access and route
How to enter
The gate generally opens after the chamber has been cleared. Zagreus cannot enter it if he lacks enough current health to pay the cost. A remaining Death Defiance does not make the entry affordable, so a player at dangerously low health may have to ignore an otherwise attractive gate.
Progression requirement
Chaos Gates do not appear from the beginning of a new save. They normally become available after six escape attempts. This is an important distinction between:
The gate’s appearance is random, so reaching the six-attempt threshold does not guarantee one in the next run. Gates also become less common in later Underworld regions. A Light of Ixion can override the ordinary restrictions and force a Chaos Gate encounter.
Spawning restrictions
These are encounter-generation rules rather than visible geography. A player cannot search for a fixed gate location or follow a permanent route to Chaos.
---
How to enter
- 01Begin an escape attempt.
- 02Clear an eligible chamber.
- 03Look for a Chaos Gate marked by the eye-like symbol of Chaos.
- 04Approach the gate and accept the health sacrifice.
- 05Speak to Chaos and choose one of the offered boons.
- 06Leave the Realm and continue the run.
Entry cost and the Cosmic Egg
Entering a Chaos Gate normally costs health. The exact cost rises slightly according to run progress, making a late-run visit more expensive than an early one. This cost is paid before the player benefits from the Chaos boon, so it matters most when Zagreus is already wounded or when a curse would reduce his survivability further.
The Cosmic Egg is Chaos’s keepsake. It improves the quality of Chaos boons and removes the health cost of entering Chaos’s domain. This makes it the most direct way to turn an uncertain gate into a reliable build opportunity, particularly in early chambers where the temporary curse has time to expire before a boss fight.
However, the keepsake does not create gates by itself. It makes existing gates safer and improves their offerings, but Zagreus still has to find one.
Practical entry checklist
If the gate is early and the curse lasts only a few encounters, the exchange is usually easier to justify. If it is immediately before a boss, a curse affecting attack, special, cast or health can be much more dangerous.
---
Chaos boons
Chaos boons are the Realm’s central service. They are not instant, unconditional upgrades in the style of most Olympian boons. Instead, the boon presents:
The exact pool includes improvements to attack, special, cast, dash, backstab, health, obols, gemstones and other run resources. Chaos also has a Legendary boon, Defiance, which requires another Chaos boon before it can be offered. The important principle is not to judge a boon solely by its opening penalty. The delayed reward is often the reason to accept it.
How to evaluate a boon
A curse that reduces attack damage is a poor choice for an attack-focused weapon if it lasts until Lernie, Theseus and Asterius or the final boss. A curse affecting cast damage may be manageable for a weapon build that mainly uses attacks and specials.
Chaos boon directory
The following are the named Chaos boon entries associated with the base game’s boon pool. Their exact numerical values depend on rarity and the current game version.
Defiance is the special Legendary entry and has a prerequisite of at least one other Chaos boon. The other names represent the ordinary curse-and-reward families, with the selected effect varying according to the offering.
Rarity and the Cosmic Egg
Chaos boons can appear at different rarities. The Cosmic Egg improves the rarity of Chaos’s offerings while also removing the entry health cost. It is particularly useful when deliberately planning a run around Chaos boons rather than merely accepting a convenient one encountered by chance.
Do not confuse rarity improvement with a guarantee of a particular boon. The keepsake improves the quality of the available offer, but the offered category remains subject to the game’s boon-generation rules.

Chaos boons: steps
- 01a temporary curse;
- 02a number of encounters for which the curse applies;
- 03a stronger reward that activates after the required encounters.
Residents, visitors and associated characters
Chaos
Chaos is the sole permanent resident and host of the Realm. In the base game, Chaos is the primordial origin associated with the void before creation, and is presented as older than Nyx, the Olympians and the Underworld’s current order. Chaos has no faction in the Olympian or Chthonic hierarchy and does not serve Hades.
Chaos’s gameplay role is that of a risk-and-reward boon giver. Their relationship with Zagreus develops through repeated conversations and gifts, eventually leading to a keepsake and further story dialogue. The character’s detached, experimental attitude is reflected mechanically: a Chaos boon makes Zagreus accept a temporary problem in exchange for a possible stronger future state.
Nyx
Nyx is not normally present in the Realm at the beginning of the game. She may later appear there after Zagreus helps restore the connection between her and Chaos. This is the result of the Night and Darkness prophecy and the related Eldest Sigil Restoration Work Order.
The relevant storyline requires more than simply finding a Chaos Gate. The player must develop the relationship with Nyx and Chaos, continue advancing the main game’s conversations, purchase the required House Contractor work order and then speak to Nyx in Chaos’s domain when the opportunity arises.
Ordinary NPCs
There are no ordinary workers, merchants, soldiers or ambient residents in the Chaos Realm. Chaos and the possible Nyx visit are the only named character encounters associated with the location in the base game.

Fishing
The Chaos Gate room can contain a fishing point. This is not guaranteed, and it is separate from the main purpose of the location. Fishing is possible after purchasing the Rod of Fishing from the House Contractor and finding an available spot after the room has been cleared.
The three fish associated with the Chaos Gate are valuable compared with many ordinary Underworld catches:
Fish are exchanged with the Head Chef in the House of Hades rather than used directly in the Chaos Realm. A fishing point is therefore an optional bonus, not a service provided by Chaos.
Fishing directory
Because the room is uncommon and the fishing point is not guaranteed, players working towards the River Denizens prophecy should fish whenever the distinctive notification sound appears. There is no need to leave the Realm immediately after taking the boon, but Zagreus must clear any encounter associated with the room before fishing can begin.

Fishing
| Rarity | Fish | House of Hades value |
|---|---|---|
| Common | Mati | 100 |
| Rare | Projelly | 250 |
| Legendary | Voidskate | 500 |
Enemies, bosses and hazards
The Chaos Realm itself contains no normal combat encounter and no boss. Its danger comes from the entry cost and the curse attached to the chosen boon.
Main hazards
The Realm is therefore a strategic hazard rather than a combat hazard. There are no enemies to defeat, traps to dodge or rooms to clear inside the domain.
Is the gate missable?
Yes, in practical terms. A Chaos Gate can be ignored, and its appearance is random. It is also impossible to force an ordinary gate in every chamber. A player may complete many runs without seeing a suitable gate after reaching the unlock threshold.
The Nyx storyline is also progression-dependent. If the relevant Contractor work order, affinity or conversation conditions have not been met, a visit cannot occur merely because Zagreus enters Chaos.
---
Progression and story changes
Cosmic Egg
The first major reward associated with Chaos is the Cosmic Egg keepsake. It is obtained through the usual relationship and gifting progression with Chaos. Once equipped, it removes the health cost of entering Chaos Gates and improves the quality of Chaos boon offerings.
Night and Darkness
The most substantial location-specific storyline is the reunion of Nyx and Chaos. The player must:
The prophecy is called Night and Darkness. It concerns Nyx’s long separation from Chaos and is one of the game’s relationship-focused minor prophecies. The Contractor work order costs a large amount of Darkness, so it is a late progression project rather than an early-run objective.
Completion checklist
---
Night and Darkness
- 01meet and continue speaking with Chaos;
- 02develop Chaos’s affinity;
- 03continue the relationship with Nyx;
- 04advance the story until the relevant House Contractor work order becomes available;
- 05purchase Eldest Sigil Restoration;
- 06enter Chaos’s domain and speak with Nyx when the event becomes available.
Recommended exploration route
Because the Chaos Realm has no internal route, the best route is determined by the chamber in which the gate appears.
Early-run route
This is generally the safest route for experimenting with Chaos because there are more encounters remaining.
Late-run route
---
Early-run route
- 01Enter the gate in Tartarus if health is healthy.
- 02Prefer a boon whose curse expires before the Tartarus boss.
- 03Use the remaining Tartarus chambers to activate the reward.
- 04Continue to Asphodel with the improved build.
Mid-run route
- 01Check whether the curse will still be active during Lernie or the Elysium bosses.
- 02Avoid attack or special penalties if the build depends almost entirely on that move.
- 03Accept resource or defensive rewards if the offensive curse is too risky.
- 04Fish if a point appears, then resume the run.
Late-run route
- 01Enter only with adequate health or the Cosmic Egg.
- 02Check how many chambers remain before the final boss.
- 03Avoid boons whose rewards cannot activate before the end of the run.
- 04Consider taking the gate for dialogue or prophecy progress even when the boon is suboptimal, but do not sacrifice a likely victory without a clear reason.
